These days many walk these streets totally oblivious of the sorrid past that was this & many other dire slum neighbourhoods in Manchester.

My grandad and my uncle John Joseph were baptized at St.Michael's. My Mam was at the last service before it closed. My people would usually call the Flags- the burying ground.

Oldham University? What a joke! The town has been neglected or ruined by successive councils. The town itself is a joke - and a bloody big one. Best wishes from a Gloddick Mouse.

I don’t think those are the Angel steps from Lowry’s painting. I think the steps from Lowry’s painting are at the bottom of the park, at Irk street. I’m open to correction though.

Yes People have no idea of the true history of this country They assume we had it easy!!! How wrong!! My mother was a clog wearer who started in the mill at 14 Sanitation was the same in the 1920s in Leigh Lancashire, one toilet at the end of the alley

At 13.14 can be seen a former hat block factory of William Plant & Sons. My grandfather worked there as a foreman for a while (his father being one of the Sons) but it wasn't really his thing and he went on to be a performer in comedy and singing (Jimmy Plant).

I wouldn't ever admit or tell that my ancestors lived in slums. Immigrants n over crowding are the problem. Illegals .they end up dieing n it's not America's fault.

An excellent and informative video, thanks. I first came across Angel Meadow in a book about life in and around there with some survivors working at Smithfield Market. I think it was written by a teacher about his forebears. It was, as you said, ‘He’ll on earth.”

marx and engels built the road of good intentions, we know where that ended . 100 million murdered. People make their own slum, give them nice houses and they soon turn into a slum.

My grand mother was a Kilcourse and lived in the 'Meadow until she met my granddad who lived in the Greengate tenements. Her elder brother started a stall in the local meat and veg market (my brother had a unit there when it became the village project in the early 80s), but now in my late 70s I can still recall the tales my gran used to tell, many quite naughty and she said that times were hard, but they all worked as a community, something that folks today can take a lesson from

2:04 - the same thing is still going on - landlords are buying houses, turning the rooms into flats, and then letting them out at horribly inflated prices. HMOs I believe they're called.

Wilfred(Billy) Hopkins wrote about his mother's childhood and his early childhood in Angel Meadow before they were bombed out in 1940 and were re-housed near Smedley Lane Cheetham He wrote 6 books altogether , The first two were largely dictated by his mother Kate Lally , before her death in about 1979 His books are a slightly fictionalised account of what really happened. His way out of poverty was passing the 11 plus and going to Xavarian College in 1939 His first 2 books are called Our Kid , and Kate's story. He writes about his aunt and Cousin living in the basement of their house in "Butler Court ". I have found his family in the 1881 Census.

Excellent Video I already knew of Angel Meadows having watched a video on the area by Martin Zero.. Many towns and cities had a area like this when industrial Revolution started and people flooded into already crowded cities. As a Londoner there were many places normally near to obnoxious industry where cheap Jerry built houses were thrown up by unscrupulous landlords Many persisted into the 20th century Many nears the Docks were flattened by the Luftwaffe and Many people moved out if London to places like Harlow Stevenage and other New Towns.

Fantastic video! I live in the Angel Meadow area and it’s important to know the history of where you live. Very sympathetic commentary on the struggles of these early communities- it’s a shame this isn’t more widely taught to new generations. It shows how important it is to notice the stories around you. You made some great observations and it’s quite poignant.

Another very informative video Barry thank you. First came across your site when I was looking for information about the Hovima Costa Adeje that we had booked for 23rd June 22, however due to TUI overselling and under delivering they cancelled on us,really feel sorry for the other pax who do not have the flexibility that we have ( retired couple) our daughter is currently staying here in the Sol Matias Beach and has given us rave reviews. Without hesitation I have booked for the 20th August with Jet 2 and so looking forward. Keep up the excellent reviews Renee and Barry, I shall have to make you my No 1 go too. Best Regards and good health.
